Mission Statement

The Professional Baseball Physical Therapy Society (PBPTS) is a professional association representing the physical therapists in professional baseball. We serve the players of Major League Baseball, the member clubs, and members of our community. Our purpose is to strive for the highest quality of healthcare for professional baseball and those in the community that enjoy and love the sport. We will strive to be an education based society with the intentions of promoting growth, understanding, and maintenance of baseball at all levels of participation.

Our mission shall be to:

Promote and encourage application of the most advanced knowledge, techniques, and evidence based implementation of the science of physical therapy, athletic training, strength and conditioning, chiropractic, and sport science into the prevention, training, treatment, and rehabilitation aspects of individuals in the sport of baseball.

Function as a professional association for professional baseball physical therapists to promote the welfare of its members and the physical therapy profession.

Function as a professional association for professional baseball physical therapists to promote safe and informed participation in the sport of baseball throughout the different age levels of participation.

Provide for the exchange among its members, other professionals in professional baseball (ATCs, MDs, DOs, DCs, CSCSs, Sport Scientists, Nutritionists, Sport Psychologists, Scouts, etc.), and leading healthcare providers of current ideas, techniques, and scientific data.

Uphold the integrity and ethical standards of our fellowship that exists between our members and the medical community within professional baseball. This includes but is not limited to working in coordination with other healthcare professionals, Major League Baseball, directors of affiliated organizations, or any combination of these entities to obtain and deliver the best possible care to the professional baseball player. This can be while under the direction of any of these entities or while in the act of directing.

History

We started out as an informal group in 2017 and have continued to organize into the process of becoming an official 501 c(6) society. Articles of Incorporation as the Professional Baseball Physical Therapy Society were filed in the state of Arizona January 22, 2020. We have acquired our Internal Revenue Service Employee Identification Number and are working on the process of filing the 1024 form with the Internal Revenue Service.

Our members are made up of the 30 Major League Baseball Clubs’ organizational medical staff members that are licensed physical therapists. At the moment, there are 105+ individuals that possess a physical therapy license in professional baseball. We currently have active members from 28 of 30 Major League Baseball teams.

Our Team

We have a Board of Directors, and our current Officers are President Brad Epstein (Reds), Vice President Josh Bickel (Mets), Secretary Regan Wong (Rangers), Treasurer Andrew Pipkin (Blue Jays), American League Representative John Biggar (Blue Jays), and National League Representative Aaron Wengertsman (Padres).

We have a social media committee that frequently updates and maintains accounts on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. We are working towards promoting the profession of physical therapy and the care of baseball players amongst Major League Baseball clinicians, as well as the general public.
