Professional Description:
The Pirates are seeking a Minor League Physical Therapist to be assigned to the Dominican complex with opportunity to travel to the Florida complex for select camps. This position will be under the direct supervision of the Senior Rehab Coordinator while working alongside the Dominican Republic-based Medical Staff in the management of player healthcare, including but not limited to prevention, maintenance, evaluation and treatment programs.
Duties / Responsibilities include but not limited to:
Clinical Evaluation/Diagnosis
- Accurate diagnosis of physical impairments/limitations for acute, sub-acute, chronic and post-op cases.
- Ability to refer to team physicians and/or external medical professionals when additional information is needed to determine appropriate plans of care or if an injury is within the PT scope of practice.
- Develop prognoses for return to competition based on examination findings.
- Highly skilled in body movements evaluation specific to baseball athletes.
- Collaborates with additional skill set experts (MD’s, ATC’s, S&C, RD’s and Mental Skills) to ensure a holistic assessment.
Rehab/Re-Conditioning
- Oversee all long-term rehab care at the Dominican complex including but not limited to:
- Develop rehab treatment plans with re-evaluation as necessary to modify treatment plans.
- Communication with team physicians or external medical professionals for medical consult.
- Scheduling MD exams, diagnostic imaging, DME consultations / fitting.
- Return to play progressions/calendars in collaboration with coaching, medical, nutrition and S&C staff.
- Collaboration with Major League Performance staff, Senior Rehab Coordinator and Minor League Lead PT on rehab plans when 40-man roster athletes are performing rehab at the Dominican Complex.
Prevention
- Collaborates with Performance staff to develop preparation and recovery programs to optimize performance while minimizing risk for overuse injuries.
- Collaborates with players/Performance staff on key metrics to assess daily readiness.
- Assists in developing and implementing athlete assessments in off-season camps and during the season.
- Oversees and adheres to health & safety measures of cleanliness of the training room and performance center.
- Ability to critically think and problem solve as part of a team to address player performance needs.
Organization & Administration
- Communicates with coordinators within medical, strength and conditioning, nutrition and mental performance on rehab player progress.
- Communicates routinely with coaching staff and coordinators to optimize rehab progressions by incorporating on-field performance goals into the rehab process.
- Maintains electronic medical records according to the MLB minimum standards.
- Maintains return to play calendars for each rehab athlete.
- Reinforces a player-centered culture daily in the athletic training room and weight room.
- Collaborates with the lead ATC, support ATCs and Medical Services Coordinators for equipment/supply needs for the training room at the Dominican complex.
Professional Responsibility
- Maintains professional licenses and CEU’s to ensure a growth mindset in the fields of sports medicine, rehab & baseball.
